DevOps and cloud engineering in Australia in 2026
Australia's DevOps market is strong and characterised by sustained high demand across three segments: financial services cloud transformation (the major banks are deep in multi-year AWS and Azure migrations), technology companies (Atlassian and Canva have world-class SRE functions), and government (Australian federal and state governments are modernising infrastructure with cloud-first mandates). The supply of senior DevOps and platform engineers does not meet demand, and salaries have grown significantly over 2023–26.
Australia has an additional high-value niche for DevOps engineers: government security clearances. DevOps engineers with ASD-approved cloud deployments experience (IRAP-assessed systems, Protected classification workloads) command significant premiums in Canberra and at defence-adjacent employers. Australian citizenship is required for most government DevOps roles above baseline level, which limits this market to candidates who have achieved permanent residency and then citizenship.
