Worked examples
5, 10 and 20 LPA, step by step
5 LPA. Basic is ₹2,00,000 a year. Employer PF of ₹24,000 and gratuity of ₹9,620 sit inside the CTC but are never paid to you monthly, which leaves gross salary of ₹4,66,380. Take off the ₹75,000 standard deduction and taxable income is ₹3,91,380, so income tax for the year is ₹0, because the rebate covers taxable income up to ₹12 lakh. Your own PF of ₹24,000 comes off as well, leaving ₹4,42,380 a year, or ₹36,865 a month. Under the old regime with the deductions below it would be ₹36,865. Open 5 LPA in the calculator.
10 LPA. Basic is ₹4,00,000 a year. Employer PF of ₹36,000 and gratuity of ₹19,240 sit inside the CTC but are never paid to you monthly, which leaves gross salary of ₹9,44,760. Take off the ₹75,000 standard deduction and taxable income is ₹8,69,760, so income tax for the year is ₹0, because the rebate covers taxable income up to ₹12 lakh. Your own PF of ₹36,000 comes off as well, leaving ₹9,08,760 a year, or ₹75,730 a month. Under the old regime with the deductions below it would be ₹73,195. Open 10 LPA in the calculator.
20 LPA. Basic is ₹8,00,000 a year. Employer PF of ₹36,000 and gratuity of ₹38,480 sit inside the CTC but are never paid to you monthly, which leaves gross salary of ₹19,25,520. Take off the ₹75,000 standard deduction and taxable income is ₹18,50,520, so income tax for the year is ₹1,76,908. Your own PF of ₹36,000 comes off as well, leaving ₹17,12,612 a year, or ₹1,42,718 a month. Under the old regime with the deductions below it would be ₹1,31,993. Open 20 LPA in the calculator.
One thing the table shows that a single calculation hides: the rebate under the new regime stops abruptly. With these assumptions the highest CTC with no income tax is about ₹13,36,000. Marginal relief then phases the tax in, so the row for 14 LPA is only a little ahead of 13 LPA. If a raise takes you across that line, look at the in-hand difference, not the CTC difference, before you celebrate or negotiate.
Assumptions
What every row assumes
- Basic pay is 40% of CTC. Many employers use 40% to 50%; your offer letter has the real figure.
- Employee and employer PF are each 12% of basic, on basic up to the ₹25,000 monthly wage ceiling, so at most ₹3,000 a month each.
- Gratuity is set aside at 4.81% of basic, inside the CTC, and is paid only when you leave after five years.
- HRA is 50% of basic, the metro rate. It only changes tax under the old regime, where the rent above earns an exemption.
- New regime: the ₹75,000 standard deduction, FY 2026-27 slabs, the rebate up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income with marginal relief, and 4% cess.
- Old regime: a ₹50,000 standard deduction, the HRA exemption, 80C up to ₹1,50,000 including your PF, and 80D.
- No professional tax. In Maharashtra or Karnataka it is ₹2,500 a year, about ₹208 a month less than the row.
- All of the CTC is fixed pay. No variable pay, employer NPS, meal cards or ESIC.
Limits
What this table does not do
It does not know your salary structure. Two offers with the same CTC can pay quite different amounts each month, mostly because of the basic share, whether PF is capped, and how much of the CTC is variable. It is not tax advice, and it does not file anything. For the full breakup with your own numbers use the CTC breakup calculator; for a single monthly figure, the take home salary calculator; and to see what a raise is really worth, the salary hike calculator.
If you are weighing two offers, the guide to comparing job offers covers what to put side by side, and the LPA calculator converts a monthly figure back to LPA.
