Scotland is not covered, and neither are student loans. Scottish income tax runs on its own six bands. If you have a student loan, expect a further 9% above your plan threshold.
What this assumes
- England, Wales and Northern Ireland rates. Scotland sets its own bands and this does not cover them. National Insurance is the same across the UK.
- 2026/27 thresholds, on the standard 1257L tax code with no adjustments for benefits in kind, underpayments or other allowances.
- Income tax at 20% on the first £37,700 of taxable income, 40% to £125,140 of gross pay, then 45%. The allowance and basic rate limit are frozen until April 2028.
- Class 1 employee National Insurance at 8% between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2%. Employer contributions are not shown, since they do not come out of your pay.
- Student loan and postgraduate loan repayments are not deducted, and for most graduates they are a further 9% above the plan threshold, with 6% on top for a postgraduate loan.
- Pension figures assume salary sacrifice, which saves both tax and National Insurance. A personal or relief-at-source scheme saves income tax only.
- From April 2029 the National Insurance saving on salary sacrifice is capped at £2,000 a year. That is outside this tax year, so it is not applied here, but it will reduce the benefit of sacrificing more than that.
- A full tax year on this salary, taxed cumulatively. Changing jobs part way through can leave you temporarily over or under paid on tax until the codes catch up.
- Salary income only. No dividends, savings interest, or self-employed profit.
An estimate for comparing offers, not tax advice. A non-standard tax code or benefits in kind will move the figure.
