Federal resume guide: the USAJOBS two-page rule
USAJOBS now caps every resume at two pages. This guide covers the rule, what each federal job entry still has to include, and how to fit a full career into the space.
The short answer
How long can a federal resume be?
Since 27 September 2025, USAJOBS will not accept or build a resume longer than two pages. OPM announced the standard on 2 September 2025. An applicant whose only resume is longer is ineligible. Each federal job entry should give the series and grade where applicable, hours per week, and start and end month and year.
Every job entry
What each federal job entry should include
Two pages is a length limit, not a lighter standard. HR specialists still read your resume to decide whether you meet the qualifications in the announcement, and they need the same facts they always did to do it. If a date or an hours figure is missing, they cannot count the experience.
Put these on every role, federal or not. The job announcement is the final word: if it asks for something extra, include it.
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| Job title | Your official title, plus the series and grade where the job was federal (for example, a GS series and grade) |
| Employer | Organization name, and the city and state |
| Dates | Start and end month and year for each role, not just the year |
| Hours per week | The hours you actually worked, so part-time experience is counted correctly |
| Duties and results | What you did that matches the announcement's qualifications, in its own words where honest |
