Notice in the US

Most US jobs are at-will, which means either you or your employer can usually end the job at any time. No federal law sets a notice period for an employee who resigns, so two weeks is a custom rather than a legal rule. A contract, a union agreement or company policy can ask for more, so check your contract.

UK

If you have been in your job for more than a month, the legal minimum is one week of notice. Your contract can require more, and often does, so the notice period in your contract is the one to follow. Notice usually starts the day after you hand it in, and giving it in writing means you have a record.

India

For most private-sector jobs in India, your notice period is set by your appointment letter or employment contract, and in establishments that have them, by the certified standing orders. There is no single figure that applies to everyone, so check your contract. If you want to leave before your notice ends, ask about a buyout or an early release in writing.

Canada

Most employees in Canada are covered by the employment standards of their province or territory. Federally regulated industries, such as banking, telecommunications and interprovincial transport, follow the Canada Labour Code instead. Whether you must give notice, and how much, depends on where you work and on your contract, so check both.

Australia

The notice you must give when you resign usually comes from your award, enterprise agreement or employment contract. Casual employees generally do not have to give notice. Check your award or contract for the period that applies to you.

How to hand in your resignation

Check your notice period

Your contract, award or appointment letter says how much notice you owe. Count from the day after you hand in your letter unless your contract says otherwise.

Tell your manager first

A short conversation before the letter lands is the usual courtesy. Then send the letter the same day, so there is a written record of the date.

Keep a copy

Save the letter and any reply. If there is ever a question about when your notice started, that record answers it.
